New year, new cupcake challenge. Last year my cupcake challenge conducted in my small apartment crowned the best red velvet, the best chocolate and the best wild card winners. This year drinkeatplay’s own cupcake challenge will crown “L.A.’s best cupcake” at the Montmartre Lounge in Hollywood this Sunday.

I will be on a panel of “celebrity” judges — Sophie Gayot, Lindsay from LAist, some guy named Sam Rubin from KTLA, and Tara de Lis from CitySearch to name a few. What a sweet gig! And we’ll go through the cute cake roster blind tasting and judging best original and best traditional in addition to the best overall. There will be peanut butter and jelly cupcakes, mocha cupcakes, cupcakes served in ice cream cones and traditional variations you know and love.

Don’t be sad! You can participate, too, boo-bee. The yummy contest lets the paying public stuff their faces, I mean, savor mini cupcakes from 16 L.A. cupcakeries and bake shops — Vanilla Bake Shop, Yummy Cupcakes, Milk, Lucky Devils and more. And ultimately we’ll all pick “L.A.’s best cupcake” together.

There will also be cheeses and a dozen free-flowing wine varietals, although I’m hoping they’ll also be serving milk and water. Lots of milk and water.

“But what about Sprinkles? and Crumbs? and Auntie Em’s? and SusieCakes?” you’re probably asking. Yeah, I dunno. Guess that means you’ll still have to conduct an informal taste test of your own later. Although, speaking from experience, you might find yourself swearing off cupcakes for about six months or so after the contest. Hope to see you kids there!
