Yeah, if you’re like me you’re not so big into tofu or huge Sunset Junction crowds. If that’s the case, maybe these other events will strike your fanny, I mean, fancy.

RoadRunner L.A. Marathon Training Starts
I tried this last year but had to drop out due to injury. Boo! But I’m gonna give it another go this year cuz it’s a pretty good training program. There are free lectures from athletic experts, a variety of pace groups to choose from, free bananas and of course, camaraderie. I think this time I’ll just start off with a run/walk group though. It’s 28 weeks and it takes dedication and determination but at the end you can add the L.A. Marathon to your list of accomplishments.

  • 7am. $155 thru 12/01 ($160 thru 2/25) for training and marathon registration. Westminster Avenue School, 1010 Abbott Kinney Boulevard, Venice. (map)

Sumo Wrestling in Downtown
Wanna celebrate Nisei Week by doing something other than eating tofu? Watch big guys go at it. Now that’s something you don’t see in L.A. every day. Cameras are allowed but they ask that you make your shots available to the amateur contenders for use in their personal archives. Aww.

  • 9am-1pm. $10. New Otani Hotel & Garden, 120 S. Los Angeles Street, Downtown. (map)

No Cookie Left Behind Charity Bake Sale
Fight childhood hunger by stuffing your face with homemade baked goods like cakes, cookies, truffles, cupcakes, brownies…essentially if it’s baked goodness, this sale will surely have it. And the best part of it all is that the money raised will go to Share Our Strength, one of the nation’s leading organizations that’s working to end childhood hunger.

  • 12-4pm. Scoops Ice Cream, 712 N. Heliotrope, Los Angeles. (map)

Bukowski Downtown Pub Crawl
I’m not a big reader but I’m always down for a pub crawl, especially if it involves seedy and not-so-seedy bars in downtown. Join some of Charles Bukowski’s fans and maybe even some of his old drinking buddies on the Lazy Lush Club’s tour of the man’s favorite dumps like Pete’s, Charlie O’s, Crabby Joe’s, King Eddy’s, and either The Edison or The Redwood Bar Grill. Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and dress nice in case you do go to the Edison. There’s a dress code, ya know.

  • 9pm. $20. Starts at Pete’s, 400 S. Main Street, Downtown. (map)

$4 Tequila Shots at Mountain Bar
Who would think you’d get rewarded for wearing pink? If you show up at the Mountain Bar in pink things (sunglasses, socks, whatever) you can get a tequila shot for $4. Now what kind of tequila it is, I dunno but still. AND happy hour here runs from 6 to 10pm — 10pm! — so get there early to take advantage of $3 margaritas, $4 beers and $5 well drinks. My ol’ buddy dj Merlin (or Holla Back Merle as he’s going by these days) will be spinning electro, dance, hip hop and ’80s mashups for you and the gang.

  • 9pm. No cover. The Mountain Bar, 473 Gin Ling Way, Chinatown. (map)

Sunday, August 19

50% Off Margarita Party at Malo
OK, I had to throw in this Sunset Junction to-do in here. But it’s 50% off margaritas at hip cantina, Malo! Yelp is heading it up so if you want access to cheap and delish frescas at the street fair, stop by the Yelp booth that’s located near the carnival rides and pick up a drink ticket. BTW, this is going off on Saturday, too, but margaritas on a Sunday afternoon are better.

  • 2-4pm. Sunset Junction, 3900-4300 Sunset Boulevard and 4000-4200 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles. (map)

Last Day of Barneys Warehouse Sale
Did you get your fancy designer shoes for cheap yet? Better hurry, the Barneys Warehouse Sale ends this Sunday. One of my friends found Prada shoes for $150. Lucky! Yup, still pricey stuff but staple designer wear that would have otherwise cost seven times that. She likes to look at her new shoes and pet them.

  • Free. Santa Monica Airport, 3223 Donald Douglas Loop, Santa Monica. (map)
