Culture in the Early AM: Late Night at LACMA

— by Caroline on Crack

Can’t sleep? Tossing and turning at night? Might as well do something about that. How about Late Night at LACMA? Dance to dj Kid Millionaire (aka Steve Aoki), enjoy Ima Robot, check out Dan Flavin’s soothing fluorescent light works and eat a street taco. Last year’s Late Night Bash at the museum was a blast. Awfully crowded with the cultured and hip young people but fun.

And this year’s soiree promises to be even better what with Hit + Run personalized T-shirt screenings, a sneak preview of the remake to Hairspray (which I honestly don’t get but figure will draw an interesting crowd for Travolta in drag alone) and did I already mention local faves dj Steve Aoki and Ima Robot?

The kicker, though? It’s absolutely free. All you have to do is RSVP to get priority entry. That simply means you don’t have to wait in the “No RSVP” line until the RSVP line hits a lull or whatever. But since this is sure to be a popular event, LACMA’s site only takes an RSVP per person so you’ll have to take care of yourself and then make sure all your friends do the same. Hurry, before it’s all filled up.

The only not-so-great thing is that cocktails run about $9 (that was last year’s price for a Jack and Coke) and the lines at the bar will definitely be long. So I’d suggest finding other means ::cough flasking it cough:: for getting cocktailed. Hey, maybe hit up Tom Bergin’s or Molly Malone’s around the corner first.

Also, you might want to get there early if you want that custom T-shirt or to scrawl on the interactive art mural, since last year things just got crazier during the course of the night and there were long lines for everything.
