This Weekend: Your Prom Queen's Suggestions

So many parties this weekend! Too bad I’m going to be out in the desert somewhere pitching tents and roasting smores and… suffering from a state of unpluggedness. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to enjoy all the fun in town. Go, and please tell me about it. I’ll party vicariously through you.

FCKR & HIT+RUN present BLOCK BUSTER!

Bring back a special souvenier from this Friday’s Firecracker dance party at Chinatown’s Grand Star. Noo, not sore muscles from all that boogying, rather a one-of-a-kind Firecracker shirt. HIT+RUN will be doing some live screenprinting, and you get to choose the combination and placement of the exclusive designs. Afterward, stink up your new shirt by dancing to resident djs Azul, Kutmah, King Wo, Coleman, Praise One & Alfred Hawkins.

  • 9:30pm. Amount: $10. Grand Star, 943 N. Broadway, Los Angelees 90012

$coundrels Art Opening Reception with Open Bar

Check out the art opening at Venice Contemporary for artwork from the Juxtapoz/lowbrow scene, an open bar sponsored by Grolsch and Effen Vodka (wee!) and a dj. Should make for a fun artsy-fartsy night with some young hipsters. The gallery is located near the Venice Grind coffeehouse and I remember driving by it once at night and there was this huge crowd of people hanging around outside. I guess these events are really popular. The $coundrels exhibition runs through June 10 but this night is the only time you get the free drinks and the arty scene.

2nd Annual Prom Night “Just Like Heaven” 1987 at Saints & Sinners

It’s that time of year again…PROM NIGHT! Last year’s was totally rad. And I might make it back in time from the desert to give the crown away to this year’s prom queen, but I dunno. But the music was awesome (great dj), the spiked punch stronnnng and the crowd had the right amount of ’80s spirit as everyone was dressed in their favorite fashion don’ts. If you go, remember to don that vintage taffeta or tux since you won’t be allowed in otherwise. (BTW, anyone looking for a teal prom dress? I don’t think I fit in it anymore.) Class of ’87, fight fight fight!
