To celebrate the remodeling of its theaters, Universal CityWalk Cinemas is having an open house all day today where you can see movies for free. Guests will also be treated to a 20-foot tall popcorn bucket and free soda. All this to show you “The Best Movie-Going Experience in L.A.” Quite a boast considering all the great movie houses we already have in our city.

But these remodeled theaters present movie-goers with ergonomically designed, stadium-style seats with lots of legroom. No more getting the back of your chair kicked! Ugh, hated that! And movies will be shown on huge curved wall-to-wall screens accompanied by a state-of-the-art digital sound system.

Free movie showings start at 12:15 pm and end with the last regular show of the day at 9:20. Spiderman 3 may not count in the festivities but you can see 300 in IMAX, Blades of Glory and Disturbia for free. Today is a good day to play hooky. Check here for the movie schedule.

And if you, like me, hated having to pay for parking at CityWalk, it’ll be free “rebated” for this occasion. Whatever that means. Woo!
