Groundlings School: Improv for Non-Funny People

The Groundlings — the birthplace of many famous actor-comedians who’ve gone on to SNL, Mad TV and sitcom fame — actually offers improv classes for non-professionals. That’s right, any unfunny schmo can take a class from the same place where people like Will Ferrell, Phil Hartman, Conan O’Brien and Pee Wee Herman got their start.

Will you be as funny as them? Maybe not but the courses do offer to “help build self-confidence and develop creativity.” My brother, a screenwriter, took the class recently to help him with his comedy writing skills for his script and he loved it. Recommends it to everyone.

The other great thing is that in order to encourage an uninhibited environment, class sizes are restricted to 16 students and auditing isn’t allowed so there’s no pressure, just fun.

Classes meet once a week for six weeks. There are three six-week classes offered ranging in price from $225-$250.

The next class session is coming up August 28, with registration day August 21.
