Beachy Keen Twilight Dance Series at the SaMo Pier

— by Caroline on Crack

I was amazed at how many people showed up to picnic on the beach last night. And how many people thought to bring candles and paper bags.

I’ve heard about the Twilight Dance Series at the Santa Monica Pier many times before but it wasn’t until I saw the above picture that I really considered going. How fun is that? The featured band is playing to the masses on the pier above while other music lovers can picnic on the beach below. And check out that one picnicker in the center of the photo with candles around their beach blanket. Tres romantique!

The 22nd Annual Twilight Dance Series is another must-do for the summer. Going off every Thursday til August 31, this year’s series is sponsored by Amoeba Music and brings an eclectic array of musical talent to Santa Monica, from club-style hip-hop to gypsy jazz to reggae.

Tomorrow’s show presents the killer surf guitars of Dick Dale and Agent Orange. You may recognize King of the Surf Guitar Dick Dale’s licks on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. While Agent Orange’s sound is known for having influenced bands like Nirvana, The Offspring and Green Day.

It’s the ultimate SoCal experience — enjoying surf safari music on a summer’s eve while picnicking on the beach. Unfortunately

alcohol isn’t allowed on the beach so, uh….yeah.
