El Guapo Mexican Cantina: Not So Guapo?

— by Caroline on Crack

El Guapo

The first things that caught my eye about the reviews of El Guapo Mexican Cantina was the 42-ounce Monster margarita, select half-off drinks from 4pm to 8pm and $1 tacos on Tuesdays. It’s a Mexican cantina/sports bar in that there are 16 different kinds of tequila and more than 20 TVs broadcasting sporting events, so it sounds like THE place to go to if you want to watch the big game and get really drunk with a bunch of your friends. Hells yeah!

El Guapo (no, not the villain from The Three Amigos) is actually owned by the same people from the Continental. Does that mean you’ll see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck? Actually, I think it means that it is a fancier, hipper version of Cabo Cantina with “sexy waitresses and handsome bartenders.”

From CitySearch:

This easy-on-the-eyes Mexican cantina along the famously funky Melrose shopping strip oozes breezy, laid-back SoCal appeal. The Southwestern-style main room with roomy center-bar area is an homage to beer and ballgames, with more than 20 televisions broadcasting local and national sporting events. The spacious outdoor sundeck, featuring large umbrellas and toasty heat lamps, is perfect for laying low, day or night. Enthusiastic cuties zip around occasionally offering up free “fun shots” to a crowd of Von Dutch-sporting hipsters, boisterous sports fans and weary shoppers.

There’s Mexican food, of course, but a friend of mine said that the two times she went there she got food poisoning. The first time she thought was a fluke so she gave them another chance and got sick..AGAIN! Apparently it was an ugly and painful experience. So now I’m not as excited about their fajitas, but maybe instead I’ll see a handsome bartender about a Buttery Nipple (a Butterscotch and Bailey’s shot! Geez!).
