Friday, September 14

Sassafras Bar Opens
Gawd, I love the name of this place. The Interwebs have been abuzz about this new Southern-inspired bar from the 1933 Group (Thirsty Crow, Oldfield’s). Barrel-aged cocktails, make-your-own-buck cocktail menu, housemade sasaparillas and live music. Yup, it’s the first 1933 bar to feature bands.  Specifically Southern roots and soul bands will perform nightly from a balcony overlooking the space.

  • 6pm. Sassasfras Bar, 1233 N Vine Street, Hollywood (map). (323) 467-2800.

Playa kicks off a new Baja Chef Series which will feature three of Baja’s top chefs and their a la carte menus each week. Bar director Julian Cox will create cocktails to go with each menu as well as serve up his new Baja Punch. This Sunday’s chef is Sabina Banderas of La Guerrerense, a seafood stand in Mexico known for tostadas of sea urchin, sea cucumber and sea snail. Banderas won “Best in Show” at LA Street Food Fest, awarded by the likes of Jonathan Gold. Upcoming chefs are Benito Molina and Tacos Kokopelli.
